Movements - Film

Created for Oslo Municipality and the Finnish-Norwegian Cultural Institute 2020.

The research approach for the filmed work involved establishing a variety of improvisation tasks for the artists to perform together. In order to develop an interactive quality within the improvisations, the artists took it in turns to lead and follow each other, distributing initiative and reactivity. The two dancers would follow the improvisation of the musicians, then one dancer would listen to the musicians through headphones allowing the other dancer to react solely off of visual information. The visual artist would paint and draw guided by the music, then switch to carefully following the movements of the dancers. The musicians likewise would follow the visual artist for a period, then follow one dancer each, splitting the task into smaller simultaneous ones.

The filming and additional projection added two more dimensions of interaction as the camera added a focused frame and spatial orientation to the tasks. This gave more variance to the improvisation tasks as the other artists could also choose to react to the live projected video. Experimenting through these structures allowed the group to discover powerful images and evolve concepts of proximity of space and sound, the intersection of the real and the representational, and overlaying moving landscapes with dancing shadows.
